For reasons of its location and natural geography, Luxembourg has been a place of strategic military importance throughout history. As a result, the country suffered several foreign invasions and, each time, the country’s capital was re-fortified and expanded. In the 19th century, the Grand Duchy gained its independence and the city continued its steady expansion.
In 1952 Luxembourg became the headquarters of the European Coal and Steel Community. Later on, Luxembourg City was also chosen to be the seat of several other European institutions.
