In times of yore, the Federal Republic of Germany used to be an empire. The country gained its independence in 1871, when the German Empire was unified. After the Second World War, in 1949, Germany was divided into two countries: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). In 1990 Germany was reunited after the fall of the Iron Curtain.
Germany has a population of over 82.5 million people, which makes it one of the most densely populated countries in Europe. The national language is German, but most Germans speak fluent English. The population consists of 91% Germans, 2.5% Turkish immigrants and 6.5% of immigrants mainly coming from Greece, Italy, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Croatia and Spain.
